BARCELONA - SPAIN
RESIDENCY PERIOD: OCTOBER 22 - NOVEMBER 10, 2020   /
EXHIBITION PERIOD: OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021

The eighth edition of News From Home was undertaken as part of 'Sounds of Our Cities', a European project of cultural cooperation based upon research and the transfer of knowledge among the spheres of art, technology and social space. The aim of this project is to activate sound art ideas in order to create a story that, from contemporary reality, deals with the concept of "silenced spaces". Taking recall and memory as its point of departure, the project aims to offer a fictional landscape upon which to project various realities, while opening up debate upon current issues.

During October and November of 2020, Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy were part of a residency in Sant Andreu, where they were able to conduct field research in the community - writing notes, capturing photographs and recording sounds.

From November 11 to 21, 2021 the artists exhibited the project News From Home in Barcelona as part of the group show 'Sounds of Our Cities'. During the exhibition period they presented activation workshops and tours as part of the larger project.Over the course of the exhibition, visitors were encouraged to reflect upon the sounds that define their neighbourhood of Sant Andreu – in the past, present and imagined future. Visitors were especially encouraged to take a postcard from the exhibition space, which links via a QR-code to a sound piece available online (listen here). It is our aim that these postcards can enable a further exchange of sounds from this neighbourhood, as they are sent to new audiences.

Sounds of Our Cities is a European project of cultural cooperation based upon research and the transfer of knowledge among the spheres of art, technology and social space. It is led by the City of Roeselare, Idensitat, Dear Hunter and Aalborg University. The project focuses on two local contexts (Krottegem in Roeselare and Sant Andreu in Barcelona), as a critical reflection upon cultural identity in relation to the concepts of community and silence.
